A 16-year-old Warroad boy has pleaded guilty in the death of a toddler who was assaulted and then thrown from a window.

Justin Jones was certified to stand trial as an adult.

Just hours before his trial was to start, Jones pleaded guilty to second-degree intentional murder in the death of 15-month-old Mia Powassin.

The Warroad toddler died of blunt trauma to the head after being sexually assaulted and thrown from a window in 2002. Jones was 14 at the time of the crime.

As part of a plea agreement, all other charges were dropped, including a charge of first-degree murder.

Jones faces a maximum of 26 years in prison.
