ELK RIVER, MINN. - Counterfeit cash is showing up at area garage sales. Complaints are coming in from Elk River and St. Cloud. It happened over the weekend at a couple of homes.
The bills appeared to be real to the owners of the garage sales, but when they went to cash everything in the bills were red-flagged by the bank.
Officials say the bills are not high quality, but were probably made using high quality copying equipment.
KARE 11 talked with Louis Stephens from the Secret Service. He said to look for one little coded strip that's on all bills except one dollar bills.
"It's embedded polymer," Stevens said. "Once you hold the bill up to back light and it runs from the top of the bill to the bottom and it will say USA and in this case 100. Each security thread will say the denomination of the bill."
Elk River police just want to get the word out so that people with garage sales and local businesses are on the lookout. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call Elk River police.
