A Robbinsdale police officer has been indicted by a grand jury in connection with a road rage incident last summer. Since then, two stories have emerged about what happened. Officer Landen Beard was working undercover last June. His attorney says he was heading back to the office. Beard passed a few cars, using the shoulder. His attorney says that led to a confrontation with another driver, Scott Treptow, of Coon Rapids. Treptow was driving with his wife and two kids in the car. Beard's attorney says when the cars were side by side, Treptow took out a gun and shot Landen Beard, hitting his arm and leg. Beard is now charged with making terroristic threats. His attorney says he has been with the Robbinsdale Police Department since at least 2002. The police chief there said Thursday that in light of the charge, Beard has been placed on paid administrative leave. "He's a well-respected, experienced police officer who was on duty at the time," attorney Bill Michael says of his client. "He ended up on the wrong side of a road rage incident and ended up being shot by the other individual. ... We look forward to pleading not guilty, demanding a jury trial and contesting this. He didn't do anything wrong." Scott Treptow was also indicted this week by the grand jury. He has been charged with a drive-by shooting, reckless discharge of a firearm and making terroristic threats. Treptow, who is a security guard with a license to carry a handgun, says Beard never identified himself as a police officer. Treptow says he fired at him only after Beard pointed a gun at Treptow's wife. "Scott did exactly what he was trained to do and that is protect his family because he saw the gun pointed at his wife," says Treptow's attorney Kurt Glaser. Both Landen Beard and Scott Treptow will appear in court again in February.
