ELK RIVER, Minn. -- Prosecutors have charged a man after they say he broke into a woman's home and sexually assaulted her at knifepoint.

The Sherburne County Attorney's office says 22-year-old Cory Daniel Bell was charged for the 2006 crime after DNA provided by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) matched DNA found at the scene.

Elk River Police Chief Jeff Beahen says on July 23, 2006, the woman woke up in her home to find Bell with his hand over her mouth suffocating her.  Beahen says she saw Bell had a knife and he threatened to kill her before sexually assaulting her.

According to the criminal complaint, Bell forced the woman to take off her clothes before assaulting her sexually and biting her.

The Elk River Police Department started an investigation and followed a number of leads but could not make an arrest until the BCA provided the matching DNA sample.

On Monday, prosecutors charged Bell with two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, three counts of burglary in the first degree and one count of assault in the second degree.

Bell is currently behind bars at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater.  He is in prison there because of a prior conviction for burglary in the first degree.  Beahen says that arrest and sentence follows a case where Bell was charged for a burlgary and assault with a knife in Elk River in June 2008.

Bell is expected in court on the new charges sometime in mid-January 2
