SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota's MNsure program will offer the lowest average rates of any Affordable Care Act (ACA) state exchange in the country. Minnesota Commerce Commissioner Mike Rothman revealed the rates at the State Capitol Friday.

"Minnesota consumers will be able to purchase, on MNsure, a policy as low as $90.59 per month," said Rothman.

Friday was the first time, actual rates were available on the MNsure website along with the four levels of coverage plans. The levels are Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The $90.59 rate was a bronze plan for a non-smoking 25 year old, living in the Twin Cities and with an income between $23,000 and $46,000 per year.

Several reporters asked if the cost of the MNsure policies would be cheaper than available private insurance policies. Rothman said comparing the cost of the MNsure offerings to available private insurance was not possible presently because the MNsure rates take effect in 2014 when MNsure formally begins, while private insurance rates for that year are not yet available.

Rothman said there are 141 plans in MNsure. 78 plans for individuals and 63 plans for small companies. There are plans from at least 2 insurance companies for every Minnesota county. Many counties have as many as 5 companies offering plans through MNsure.

MNsure is the Minnesota health insurance exchange under the ACA, also known as Obamacare. Sign up begins on October 1st. Click here for the MNsure website.
