GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - It's been a big week for Minneapolis hip-hop muse, Dessa. After three years of writing, recording and performing around the country, the Doomtree member released her much anticipated album, "Parts of Speech, " on June 25.
Before heading out on tour, Dessa and her band stopped by the KARE 11 backyard to perform two songs from the new CD, "The Man I Knew" and "Call Off Your Ghost."
"We've been writing the material for a couple years and refining it for the past year to try to get exactly the sonic landscape that can blend both hip-hop production and then a more chamber-rock and indie-rock feel, too," Dessa said.
The rapper, singer and poet has recently gained the attention from the likes of MTV, Billboard and O Magazine - a sign that the hard work ethic and talent she's known for is taking her career to the next level.
"I know that there's that old adage that every overnight success is a decade in the making," she said. "And I've been an independent artist since I've started working in Doomtree, and that means that you have a slow ascent. You don't have tons of capital that's poured into really catalyze your rise but you get to make every artistic choice along the way. And for me that's been a very fair trade off."
And good news for her fans, Dessa has no plans on stopping.
"I'm as ambitious as the next guy, man. I'm trying to be a major contributor if I can," she said. "I want to go as far as our talent will alow us to."
