EDEN PRAIRE, Minn. - Eden Prairie Police received confirmation on Sunday from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner that the human remains found on Saturday in Stearns County are those of Mandy Matula.
The remains were found in Mississippi River Park in Sartell after a hiker noticed a shallow grave.
"This is the first breakthrough since the day she went missing, all the searches, all the things on TV, the flyers, the notices, we've had no chain of evidence to follow, and that has been excruciating to have no place to go look and search," said Mandy's father, Wayne Matula, on Saturday night. "Nobody knew where to go. It was all hoping, and this is the first concrete evidence that this is possibly Mandy."
The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension brought in lights and worked through the night to gain evidence from the scene.
On Sunday, the Medical Examiner reached out to Eden Prairie police with word that the body was Mandy. Police met with the family on Sunday afternoon, and they have announced a news conference for 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Matula disappeared May 1 from Eden Prairie. Her ex-boyfriend David Roe, the primary focus of police, took his own life before he could be questioned.
"We know this is tough for David's family, too, and our hearts are with them," said Mandy's brother Steven Matula. "We are so thankful that she is finally coming home."
Investigators say 24-year-old David Roe was in a relationship with Matula, but say that relationship ended not long before Matula was last seen.
