LAKEVILLE, Minn. - A multi-vehicle crash completely shut down all lanes of northbound Interstate 35 for a time at the junction with County Road 50 in Lakeville Monday.
The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Minnesota State Patrol spokesman Lt. Eric Roeske says the driver of a southbound vehicle lost control, crossed the median and struck a northbound vehicle.
Troopers and first responders are on scene taking care of the injured and trying to determine what may have triggered the accident. One lane of southbound I-35 was closed as well, to allow access by emergency responders.
Authorities were able to reopen one northbound lane shortly after 8 a.m.
Some media outlets report that salt trucks are being called in by MnDOT, suggesting that icing may have played a role.
The closure of I-35 has triggered huge backups of commuters heading north to work. Delays are reported past 210th Street in Elko. MnDOT reports that the interstate has been closed in Northfield, and motorists are being diverted to a detour.
KARE 11 is monitoring the situation and will have developments as they become available.
