GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Parenting your child is hard enough. But what options do parents have when your kid becomes addicted to alcohol or other drugs?
As Medical Director at Hazelden Youth Services, Dr. Joseph Lee has seen the crisis first hand and gives parents and families strategies in his new book, Recovering My Kid: Parenting Young Adults in Treatment and Beyond.
Dr. Lee joined KARE 11 News @4 to explain what addiction means, what treatment can provide, and what happens after treatment.
According to Dr. Lee, parents must become the CEOs of their homes as opposed to becoming hostage negotiators or "wordsmiths." That in turn requires a paradigm shift in our popular discussions to matters of greater substance.
In Recovering My Kid, Dr. Lee explains youth addiction and treatment, and how families can create a safe and supportive environment for their loved ones during treatment and throughout their recovery.
Dr. Lee's messages have been shaped through extensive work with families from all walks of life across multiple regions of the country; ranging from inner cities to rural communities.
Dr. Lee also serves as a spokesperson for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
