CRYSTAL, Minn. - In today's unsettled times, Scott Matthews is keeping his neighborhood stable. A herd of horses live in his garage.

"Come up with some new kooky idea and put it into motion; that's what I do," says the 52-year-old who just started work on his 14th "horse-bike." Like all the others, this one will be made from parts of old bicycles he's picked out of dumpsters or purchased at garage sales.

Matthews spends hours cutting spokes to give his bikes an up and down motion similar to a trotting horse and then outfits them with equine gear to complete the look.

Part Fred Rogers, part Weird Al Yankovic - Matthews is both warm and wacky. He's also become a favorite of the kids in his neighborhood.

"Sometimes I'll come down and open the garage door and they don't even wait for the garage door to go up all the way. They'll come scurrying under the garage door to get the one they want," says Matthews.

Justine Zirbes - a KARE 11 producer and a mother of four - lives next door to Matthews. "He loves building them; the kids love riding them," she says. "It's one of the biggest perks of living on this street. We've got a nice cul-de-sac and we've got Scott."
