TURTLE LAKE, Wis. - Usually when a student gets their schedule and they see that they've got two different classes at the same time, that's a problem that can only be solved through a trip to the guidance counselor's office.
But, in the case of Turtle Lake senior Ashley Lahti, such a situation was not only planned, but, it's really not a big deal.
Says Ashley, "I go to chemistry and get my assignment or correct whatever we have to do, then, I leave and go practice for band".
That's one of the advantages of going to a small school, you get to do a lot of things. And, if you're Ashley Lahti, you do a lot of things really, really well.
"Morning practices for the musical and Sunday evenings", says Ashley. "And then basketball was after school throughout the week."
For Ashley, multi-tasking has become a way of life that's allowed her to achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA, and the #1 rank in her graduating class of 39.
"I'm not home a lot at night" says Ashley. "So, I try not to have to bring anything home, and I just try to make the most of whatever time I can."
And she does. All-conference in Band, basketball, volleyball and softball, Ashley's performed in 7 school productions, earned 2-gold medals in forensics and does mission trips for Habitat for Humanity in the summer.
"We weren't there thinking the whole time we're giving this guy a house", says Ashley. "You're getting to know him and talk to him and sing with him and have fun with him but, you don't really realize what an impact you have on those people."
And, before Ashley leaves Turtle Lake for college, she wants to make sure the people there know that she hasn't been too busy to appreciate all the opportunities she and her classmates have had.
"We don't have a lot of money or a lot of staff", says Ashley. "But, they've offered a variety of classes and different opportunities to take college-level classes and I think they've done a very good job of preparing everyone in this school for college."
Ashley, who is still considering her college options, has a long-term goal of working in the healthcare field.
