"You must become a participant, not just an onlooker."

This year the Bloomington Civic Theatre celebrated its 50th birthday. Mel Kirkpatrick has been volunteering there for 48 of them! For more than half of his life, Mel has been a participant, not an onlooker. He took his lifelong love of acting and turned it into something that all of us can enjoy.

Mel says his feelings towards volunteering are a lot like the applause enjoyed by an actor. "Volunteering is a two way street. You have to feel you're doing something and getting something in return."

Besides his decades of commitment to community theater, Mel has made a commitment to community television. For the past 15 years, he's worked tirelessly on "The Time of Our Lives," a Bloomington cable access television show aimed at seniors. He's the host, researcher and writer. To date, he's taped more than 100 one-hour television segments. "I work harder now than when I was working."
