If you look at the crowd Harvey Galberth hangs out with, you'd never suspect he's 81 years old. You'll find Harvey surrounded by teenagers several times each month, and especially on Sunday mornings.
For the past 13 years, Harvey has been a volunteer for the Annunciation Youth Ministries. He plans and leads outreach events. He inspires teenagers to take part in social ministries. He even joins in the silly games and occasional pranks. But maybe his most amazing feat is packing the front pews at Sunday morning Mass. It seems teenagers are so crazy about Harvey, they will do just about anything to sit beside him during church --- even if it means cramming a dozen people into a pew designed to seat eight.
There's a simple goal behind Harvey's volunteering: to give kids an experience that connects them with God. That connection may start with a simple elbow nudge, goofy grin, or even a playful butt-bump.
"Sometimes it takes six months to reach a kid. And many times it all starts with a physical as opposed to a verbal approach."
Whatever the approach, Harvey is connecting with a group that many find hard to reach. And he plans to keep doing it for years to come.
