Dennis Flanagan's volunteer efforts started as a simple goal of a typical father. He wanted his son to play baseball. But his son had special needs. Finding a team was a challenge.
That was 11 years ago. Today, Dennis is the head coach of the "Challengers," a special needs team of the Parkway Little League on the east side of St. Paul. His goal remains simple: Work with kids so they can go home and play catch with other family members.
"It's been therapeutic for me. The kids are probably easier to coach than able-bodied kids. They like to play no matter what their abilities."
Dennis keeps the Challengers together. He organizes the team, gets the uniforms, sets the practice and game schedules, and teaches the kids how to play ball.
His coaching mantra is simple: "Just keep playing. Go home and practice."
Dennis has designated $1100 to Parkway Little League.
