"When you give a little, you get a lot more back."
Fresh fruit, new t-shirts, a warm smile... for the past 30 years, Opal Nelson has been providing veterans with life's little necessities. And she's been doing it in a big way.
As a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, she not only helps with pancake breakfasts and poppy sales at her local VFW, she hands out personal care items to those living at the MN Veterans Home and visits with vets there. She also mans the coffee cart at the VA Hospital.
Opal loves serving those who have served our country. After all, her husband and brothers were vets and she currently has a daughter in the Air Force Reserve.
When she's not helping veterans, she's at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Minneapolis where she's helped put on beautiful wedding receptions and comforting funeral luncheons for nearly 50 years.
Opal calls volunteering her hobby. She does it "because there's a need." What has it given her? She says she's found some wonderful friendships and a sense of purpose.
"It really does give you personal satisfaction."
