HUTCHINSON, Minn. - Jerry Haag can be a hard guy to pin down. He is one of the most active volunteers in the Hutchinson community.
Currently, Jerry serves as the Chairman of the Board for Common Cup Ministries, a local organization providing financial assistance, food, clothing and household items to residents in the Hutchinson area. He also spend countless hours volunteering through the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' McLeod County Board, the Hutchinson Theatre Company and Little Lambs Preschool.
When asked why he volunteers, Jerry's response was "I need a reason to get up each morning."
If Jerry isn't running a fundraiser or packing up food for children in third world countries, he's probably helping to direct funds towards volunteer projects through his Thrivent Chapter. Jerry's dependability sets him apart from other volunteers.
Bev Bonte, the Director of Common Cup Ministries, has seen Jerry's value to the community first hand on numerous occasions.
"He is very special, down to earth, truly wants to serve humanity," says Bonte. "Easy going, everyone knows him, he warms the room."
In fact, the hardest part about knowing Jerry, just might be getting him to admit that he's special. He finds this award very humbling because there are lots of people who help out.
Jerry's right, there are many more people volunteering. But it's his example that has inspired them to act.
Bonte adds, "I do think that people see what he does and they to carry on."
Jerry is always the first one to sign up to volunteer. He can be counted on to follow through on what he says he will do; in a quite, unassuming manner. When Jerry is involved, the project is a guaranteed success.
