Dentist Kent Confeld

MINNEAPOLIS -- Dentist Kent Confeld has found a way to combine career and community service; offering half-price dental work to raise thousands of dollars for research into a cure for multiple sclerosis.

"We'll get you numbed up here," dentist Kent Confeld said to patient Paul Engstrom.

It's the beginning of what won't be a normal trip to the dentist for Paul.  Despite the needle and a drill, this visit will hurt about half as much as usual. That's because Paul is here during Dr. Confeld's annual MS Crown Fundraiser. It means Paul will get three half-price dental crowns. Except for lab costs, the Minnesota Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will get all the money Kent collects for his work.

"I can't think of another way to raise the money that quickly," Kent said smiling.

"I was complaining about a tooth," Paul explained. "And then found out that he did this annual MS deal."

The first annual crown campaign at Family Dental Care in Minneapolis raised a whopping $24,000. This one will bring in thousands more for Kent's team in this year's Challenge Walk MS- Twin Cities. Part of the money will help people living with MS. Other funds will go to research to cure the disease that affects some of Kent's patients and friends.

"He's just incredible," said patient Barbara Lakey who lives with MS and Sjogren's syndrome. "He's giving his own money. This is working hard all day long and donating that money."

Barbara says Kent gives hope to all of who have MS. "Makes you feel that there is some good thing that is going to happen."

"It's a good deal on both ends," Paul said about his trip to Dr. Confeld's office.

It's a good deal for patients who'd been living with tooth pain and a good deed for people living with MS.

"Team Dental: Taking a bite out of MS," Kent said smiling.
