Jonathan Smith, Mark Smith
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Ramsey County prosecutors have charged five suspects in a series of armed robberies whose victims were targeted through Craigslist.
Criminal complaints detail the charges against brothers Jonathan Smith, Mark Smith and Charles Edwards, plus alleged co-conspirators William Chambers-Erby and Danielle Brandenburger. An unnamed juvenile is also connected to the crime spree.
Investigators say they have tied the suspects to seven separate armed robberies. They allege that the suspects lured the victims with ads for cell phones on Craigslist, and when they arrived to make the transactions victims were robbed at gunpoint.
St. Paul investigators were able to link all seven robberies based on suspect descriptions, phone numbers given and used, Facebook names, crime locations and the method used by the armed robbers.
Detectives believe Mark Smith was the mastermind who planned the robberies and made the postings, and that his brothers Jonathan Smith and Charles Edwards carried out most of the robberies.
"These defendants terrified multiple victims over a short period of time and thankfully no one was hurt, "said Ramsey County Attorney John Choi. "We will pursue justice for these victims as well as the community."
