WASHINGTON - The Costco store in Coon Rapids has recalled a batch of ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Wednesday the Costco store in Coon Rapids is recalling the product that bears the item number 33724 under the Costco label. The lean fresh ground beef was sold directly to 342 customers at the Costco located at 12547 Riverdale Blvd. in Coon Rapids. Between Sept. 4 and 7.
The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service says one illness has been linked to the product, a Minnesotan who became sick in late September. They determined there was a link between the ground beef from Costco and the illness.
The product was prepared from bull meat and ground beef from the Costco Wholesale plant in Tracy, California and bench trim prepared at the Costco in Coon Rapids. The meat may have originated from as many as 16 establishments.
The federal agency and Costco fear some of the ground beef may still be frozen and sitting in consumers' freezers. Costco has already taken steps to contact customers who purchased the product.
