Minneapolis, Minn. -- Disbelief has spread across the University of St. Thomas Law School as a former student is accused of killing a prominent local doctor.
"Utter astonishment," said professor Charles Reid. "This did not fit the profile of the character of the Ted Hoffstrom I knew."
Hoffstrom is accused of shooting Dr. Stephen Larson multiple times inside his Orono home Friday night.
Authorities revealed Monday that Dr. Larson had previously treated Hoffstrom's mother but would not elaborate on the medical care the OBGYN provided, citing patient privacy laws.
"The suspect had recently expressed hostility to his family members regarding Dr. Larson," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.
During his time at St. Thomas, Professor Reid describes Hoffstrom as relaxed, well-liked and a capable student.
"There was no indication, no warning sign that I would have ever picked up that there was some kind of violent tendency beneath the surface."
