The former CEO of Audi of America, Johan de Nysschen was appointed to head the Infiniti division in 2012 with a vision to focus on the luxury market. One of his first orders of business is transforming the names of Infiniti cars, crossovers and SUVs for the 2014 model year.
For the 2013 model year, Infiniti names were mixed and matched between letters and numbers without real guidance. Upon de Nysschen's request, Infiniti cars will be named "Q" followed by a double-digit number corresponding to the car's position in the Infiniti hierarchy. For example, Q70 is Infiniti's luxury sedan, previously known as M37. Q60 is the sports coupe/convertible and Q50 is the sport sedan.
Crossovers and SUVs will be named "QX" followed by a double-digit number. For example, QX70 is Infiniti's sporty crossover, the old FX37/FX50. QX60 is the three-row crossover and finally the QX50 is Infiniti's luxury crossover.
This naming system follows suit with how Infiniti used to name its vehicles as well as other manufacturers like BMW and Audi labeling systems. However, the numbers simply refer to the position in Infiniti's hierarchy and not the engine displacement (BMW) or the number of cylinders (Audi's previous technique).
