MINNEAPOLIS -- With election day a little more than a month away, candidates are trying to gain that final edge, and in North Minneapolis, Blong Yang decided lawn signs just aren't enough.
"You know, people say that lawn signs don't vote," said Yang. He's running for Hennepin County Commissioner in District 2 as a DFL candidate.
He asked local musicians PK Yang and Mike Yang to write him an original song and music video. "All This and More" was featured recently on a Comedy Central blog, and is gaining recognition with nearly 1,000 YouTube hits.
"I want to be the hope I believe in, I want to be the change I am seeing, I am going to be all this and more," PK Yang sang, while her friend Mike Yang came in with a rap.
"I don't believe in the same politicking, if we want change we gotta start from within," he said.
Blong Yang said he hopes the song helps him stand out and engage young voters in a diverse district of 165,000 people, spanning areas from St. Anthony, to North Minneapolis, and Plymouth.
"The first line where Mike says "I don't believe in the same politicking" spoke to me because that was the main reason why I decided to run for office," said Yang. "For myself, it's history in the making because Hennepin County has never had a person of color serve on its county board before."
Yang is Hmong American, and began life in a Thai refugee camp, moving here at age 3.
"I was on county services, grew up on county services, and pulled myself up by the bootstraps," he said.
Today, Blong Yang says while he personally can't sing, come November, he can dream, just like the line in the last verse of the song - "I want be a dream came to life, all this and more."
Blong Yang is running against Linda Higgins. She says Yang's video is "creative and clever".
Higgins is busy campaigning with a packed schedule of events in the next week. She said she served as a former state senator in District 58 for 16 years, won the Hennepin County Commissioner primary by 41 percent out of 10 candidates, along with the D-F-L endorsement.
