ST. PAUL, Minn. -- An opera adaptation of Stephen King's 1977 horror novel, "The Shining," will be making its premiere in St. Paul.
The Minnesota Opera announced the show will make its stage debut at the Ordway Center in May 2016.
The opera is being produced with King's blessing. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell are working together on the project.
The commission of this popular story is a coup for the Minnesota Opera, as opera companies are trying to produce contemporary stories for modern audiences. Everyone involved says they want to remain true to the book, rather than to the Stanley Kubrick movie starring Jack Nicholson.
Artistic director Dale Johnson says the story is perfect for the opera, and will be entertaining and scary.
