ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Prosecutors charged Jeff Trevino of St. Paul with second degree murder on Thursday. He's accused of killing his wife and then trying to cover it up. Police say they continue to search for the body of 30-year-old Kira Trevino Steger.

"Although a body has not been recovered we believe that the victim has been murdered by the defendant and is no longer alive based on the amount of blood that was found in the home," Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said moments after filing the charges.

KARE 11 asked Choi if Trevino has been helpful in locating the body. "He has not and I wish that he would (be)," the County Attorney said.

The complaint details some of the timeline:

Jeff Trevino called police Sunday to report his wife missing. Her vehicle was found at the Mall of America, where she worked, on Monday morning. Police say there was blood on the trunk and its liner.

Police say Trevino told them he last saw his wife on Friday morning. Mall surveillance shows an unidentifiable person at the back of Kira Trevino's car Friday morning, throwing a trunk liner, and getting into a cab that arrived a short time later, just one block from the defendant's home.

BCA investigators also say they found blood in several rooms in the couple's home. They say they found evidence of an attempt to clean multiple areas, writing "the blood splatter is consistent with more than one forceful blow to the victim."

Jeff Trevino stood mute as he faced a judge and a packed courtroom. Several members of Kira's family, including her mother, father, sister, cousins, and aunts, sat on one side of the room. On the other side, we can assume, was the defendant's family. They left the courtroom with the suspect's attorney, who told the court that Trevino's family drove all night from Arkansas to attend the hearing.

While the defense asked for a $100,000 bail with conditions, prosecutors requested a $500,000 unconditional bail. The judge set bail at $1 million. Trevino's next court hearing is scheduled for March 14th.
