GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- KARE 11 viewers kept volunteer call-takers busy Thursday during the 4, 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts, calling to inquire about donating bone marrow for those in need.

More than 475 phone calls were logged from people who want to get involved with donating through a program called "Be the Match."

The organization, dedicated to raising awareness about bone marrow donation, will be following up Friday with calls and emails for those who showed interest.

On Tuesday, September 27th, KARE will host a Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive. KARE 11 viewers can join the Bone Marrow Registry by getting their cheeks swabbed and filling out some paperwork.

The exact hours of the drive will be announced in coming days.

Thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases can survive and thrive, with the help of a bone marrow transplant.

On Thursday, September 15, KARE 11 helped raise awareness about the need for bone marrow donations.

During KARE 11 News at 4, 5 and 6 newscasts more than 475 phone calls were logged by phone banks from viewers calling about becoming potential bone marrow donors.

The phone banks were comprised of volunteers from the organization "Be The Match."

KARE 11 profiled donor success stories, shared the story of an 8 year old who needs a donor, and explained how the donation screening process works.

On any given day there are 158 Minnesotans who are looking for a bone marrow match. Most turn to their families first, but 70% of those in need do not have a matching donor in their family.

There is no cost for those who register to become a bone marrow donor.

In addition to donors, there is a need for funding. Be The Match provides grants to families struggling with thousands of dollars in uninsured costs, and supports research efforts to help more patients receive their transplant.

KARE will be hosting another Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive later this month. Details to follow next week.
