GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- In our ongoing series on Severe Weather Awareness week, we show you some weather applications for smart phones, tablets and online resources.

One great resource for tons of information during severe weather is the KARE 11 Weather section. During severe weather events, our interactive radar is active on our KARE 11 homepage and can always be found on KARE11.com

You can zoom in and out and move the map around since it's google earth based. You can also toggle on and off all warnings and watches.

An increasing number of us are connected to our smart phones and tablet devices, but if you'd like to stray from the traditional weather radio for your alerts, or stay connected to weather information while outside enjoying our summer weather, iMap Weather Radio (for iPhone) may be for you. The phone must be on in order to receive alerts, but it will send you alerts (even when the app is closed) based on locations you set up and also based on your GPS location. The cost of the app is a one time $9.99 however.

If you're looking for something free (though it won't alert you specifically), the KARE 11 App has a wealth of information. In addition to news and video (including a video forecast), it has our radar, current conditions and alerts based on county. It is available in the iTunes store.
