ST. CLOUD, Minn. - A Greenfield family is mourning the loss of their 20-year-old son.
Police confirm Colton Gleason passed away Friday after an assault in St. Cloud Thursday night.
"He was an amazing young man," said John Gleason, Colton's father. "This was senseless and tragic."
St. Cloud police are asking for the public to help provide information about the incident that took place in an alley in the 600 block between 8th and 9th avenues south. Investigators say Colton was walking with friends when a white sedan, occupied by several individuals, stopped near them. They believe one person got out of the vehicle and punched Colton.
The Mankato State student passed away from his injuries at a St. Cloud hospital.
"He had lots of friends who will miss him dearly," said Gleason. "He meant the world to us and he touched a lot of people."
Colton, a 2010 graduate of Orono High School, was the captain of the soccer team and according to his family an avid water-skier, mountain biker, and angler. He was studying business at Mankato.
"He was the nicest person I knew,"says long-time friend Gavin Ashburn. "It's hard to believe why anyone would do this to him."
Police believe that Colton did not know his attacker, but released few details regarding what led up to the assault.
They are asking for anyone with information to contact the St. Cloud Police Department at 320-251-1200.
