FARIBAULT, Minn. - A former drama teacher at Shattuck St. Mary's School in Faribault faces 17 criminal counts involving allegations he had sexual relations with students while employed there.
The charges against 70-year-old Lynn Seibel were filed in Rice County Monday after an extensive investigation by Faribault Police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
Investigators became aware of the allegations against Seibel when a 2001 graduate of Shattuck recently told an Olmstead County Corrections Officer that Seibel had sexually molested him while he was a student.
That man was himself facing charges of criminal sexual conduct.
The investigation grew, and law enforcement officials eventually identified at least five additional students who provided similar stories of abuse that allegedly took place between 2001 and 2003, when Seibel left the school.
The criminal complaint issued against Seibel describes "group sessions" in his classroom, student dorm rooms or the shower room. Victims say Seibel would play pornographic videos for a group of male students, show them how to masturbate, touch their genitals and then measure them with a ruler.
At least one of the students told investigators about touching and masturbation that took place inside Seibel's on-campus apartment where he lived with his wife and children.
Some of the victims also described naked dance parties organized by Seibel, where students would shower while dancing to loud music and flashing lights.
When questioned by investigators Seibel allegedly admitted to touching the genitals of students and measuring them with a ruler. He is quoted as saying "I exploited my authority and exploited their trust," but maintained he "never believed it was criminal."
KARE 11 first told you about this story in August. At least one victim contacted authorities after he saw a report on KARE television and immediately knew that the unnamed suspect was Lynn Seibel.
Prosecutors say the defendant left Shattuck after pornography was discovered on his school-issued computer. Seibel had taken it in to get fixed, and IT personnel found pornographic files on the hard drive.
The BCA says a forensic search of the computer turned up more than 14,000 pornographic images, the majority of which could be classified as child pornography.
Lynn Seibel is charged with two counts of second degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of solicitation of a child to engage in sexual conduct, one count of using a child in a sexual performance and 12 counts of fourth degree sexual conduct.
He is currently jailed in California, where police found a computer containing child pornography in his Hollywood home.
Seibel worked for 11 years as the drama teacher at Shattuck.
