Holiday shoppers to be lured by big sales

MINNETONKA, Minn. - Faster than you can say, "How was your Halloween?" the holiday shopping season is here.

November and December are always critical months for retailers, but this year experts say that shoppers should expect even more hustle and bustle.

Compared to 2012, there are six fewer shopping days between Black Friday and Christmas Eve. It means retailers are already trying to lure people in.

"They have to get you into the store and dazzle you with their presentation," said University of Minnesota marketing professor George John. "Then, they want to convince you with a price matching guarantee that you don't have to search the websites, go ahead and buy."

John says it's too early to know what fewer days in the shopping season will do, but experts predict a slight 3.9 percent increase in overall spending nationwide compared to last year.

"Every year is different," he says. "It's going to have some impact, but how much will depend much more on the confidence of people."

Trends like six-hour sale windows, layaway or offering in-store pick-up following online purchases appear to be some of the ways retailers are attracting shoppers.

One bit of advice, John says that deals are not just going to be had on Black Friday.

"If you're a flexible kind of person and just looking for a bargain, if you wait, you will find some deep, deep bargains."
