MINNEAPOLIS - If you think it's too early to start shopping for school supplies, think again. It's actually the perfect time, in fact the next two weeks you'll find the best deals according to one Twin Cities consumer expert.
Target, Wal-Mart, Staples and Office Max are all stocked with back to school supplies and some deals are as low as one cent.
"The savings can be pretty significant and the markdowns are pretty amazing," said John Ewoldt, who writes the Dollars and Sense column for the Star Tribune. "Normally these things would be 3, 4, 5 bucks and they're on sale for a quarter or 50 cents or a buck or something, so it's significant."
But Ewoldt says the key to the best deals are to shop all the stores.
KARE 11's Jeffrey DeMars' first stop was Staples, home of the penny deals which they say they'll have for a few weeks in mid-July.
Some of the penny deals involve glue and pens, but you must spend five dollars to get the penny items.
On the day Jeffrey went to Wal-Mart, he found glue sticks for 10 cents, folders for 15 cents and paper notebooks for 17 cents. Target had notebooks for 32 cents, so it's a good idea to shop around.
Each week from now until the end of August, each store will switch up its sales so keeping your eye on the ads is very important.
But whatever you do, don't wait until the last minute. Ewoldt says if you do, you'll probably be out of luck finding what you need and many items will be at full price.
