GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Waking up and getting going during the winter is tough.

It's dark and cold, which can affect our moods even when people think we should be cheery because of the holidays.

Some call it the 'winter blues', but it may also be Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Fitness Expert Chris Freytag visits KARE 11 Sunrise to talk about ways you can try to feel better.

  • Light therapy, or "phototherapy," may help - This involves sitting in front of a light box of 10,000 lux from a fluorescent bulb for a minimum of 45 minutes every morning, and for some, hours each day.
  • Check your attitude - work on positive affirmations and Can Do attitude. Spend time meditating.
  • Try something new - do a new fitness class, join a group boot camp, explore a new outdoor activity. Freshen up your routine.
  • Think "be active" and not only "exercise" - just MOVE more in general throughout the day.
