GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Do you want to save money at the grocery store, but still eat healthy?

You can do both, and it's easier than you might think if you follow a few tips.

The biggest key is to plan. If you decide on your meals for the week before you go to the grocery store, you can take stock of what you already have, and make a list of things you need.

Planning ahead will also help you avoid eating takeout meals. You can cook large batches of recipes and divide them into single serving containers to use throughout the week.

Cooking and preparing your own food means you won't have to buy convenience foods, which are often expensive. By cutting your own vegetables and making things from scratch, you'll save big.

To cut costs at the grocery store, always compare and contrast. That means you should check the unit price on the shelf below the product so you know which brand and which sizes are the best deal.

In many cases, buying in bulk is the most economical way to shop. If you have the freezer space, items like meat, poultry, fish, potatoes and frozen vegetables can be far cheaper in large quantities.

You should also try to buy produce that's in season. Fruits and vegetables are usually less expensive that way.
