NEWTOWN, Conn. - A law enforcement official says the suspect in the Connecticut school shootings is 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the son of a teacher at the school where the shootings occurred.
NBC News is reporting that his mother Nancy Lanza was killed at her home. Adam Lanza, who had been living with his mother, then drove his mother's car to the school and began the rampage, according to the report.
The first official says Adam Lanza's older brother, 24-year-old Ryan, of Hoboken, N.J., is being questioned by police. An earlier report from a law enforcement official mistakenly transposed the brothers' first names.
NBC reports tath Adam Lanza was carrying an old ID of Ryan Lanza.
The first official said Adam Lanza is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation says the brother of the gunman, Ryan Lanza, has been "extremely cooperative" and is not under arrest.
He is still be being questioned, but is not in custody and is not believed to have any connection to the school killings, according to The Associated Press source.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly on the investigation.
The official says Ryan Lanza's computers and phone records were being searched but only "in an abundance of caution." He says Ryan told authorities he had not been in touch with his brother in recent years.
