COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A wildfire in the Black Forest area northeast of Colorado Springs, Colo., has burned a handful of homes and chased people from thousands of houses, while another fire that led to the evacuation of Royal Gorge Bridge & Park charred three structures.
El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa says the Black Forest Fire led to the evacuation of about 2,530 homes Tuesday. About 300 more are under voluntary evacuation notices. He estimates eight homes have burned but said authorities are "scrambling" to fight the fire and make sure people are safe before tallying the destruction.
To the south, the Bureau of Land Management says three structures have been lost in a fire that has charred 300 acres south of the Royal Gorge Bridge and the Arkansas River.
In northern Colorado, a wildfire in Rocky Mountain National Park is sending out large plumes of smoke.
