Secretary of State Mark Ritchie from KARE
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minn. Secretary of State Ritchie, who oversaw the state's historic 2008 Senate recount, announced Tuesday that he won't seek a third term.
Richie will serve out his current term, which ends January 2015.
"This was a difficult decision for me," Richie said in a written statement, "but after months of thought and discussion with family, I concluded that January 2015 will be the right time for me to step aside -- making way for the next generation of talented leadership in the Office of the Secretary of State."
First elected in November of 2006 to serve a four-year term, the 61-year-old Minneapolis resident was re-elected to a second term in 2010.
Ritchie cites Minnesota remaining number-one in voter turnout; greater efficiency in business services; launching of the Safe at Home address confidentiality program, and the handling of two critical election recounts as his major accomplishments.
