DULUTH, Minn. - Two people are dead after two trucks collided head-on on a highway near Duluth.
The accident occurred just after 3:30 p.m. on Highway 194 East in Solway Township in St. Louis County.
Authorities said a truck equipped to drill wells was traveling westbound on 194 when it suffered tire damage causing the driver to veer into the eastbound lane, colliding with a pickup that was traveling eastbound.
The Minnesota State Patrol says a tire problem apparently caused the truck to hit the pickup.
The 61-year-old driver of the drilling rig suffered serious injuries. The Esko man was transported to Essentia Health St. Mary's in Duluth.
Both the driver and passenger in pickup truck were killed. One was from Cloquet and was 29-years-old. The second victim was from Floodwood and was 46-years-old.
"The tragedy is this afternoon we had another fatal crash where two people lost their lives," said Capt. Steve Stromback, of the Minnesota State Patrol.
The names and genders of the two victims are being withheld pending family notification.
