MINNEAPOLIS - A 26-year-old woman is in custody and charged in the stabbing death of another woman on the city's near south side August 21.
Police say 26-year-old Yolanda Lynn Smith was arrested August 25 after officers spotted her in the area of West River Road and Lake Street and gave chase. Smith had fled on foot into a wooded area and hid under some bushes, where police eventually found her.
Smith was identified by witnesses as the person who fatally stabbed another woman during an altercation early the morning of August 21. Officers were called to 5th Avenue South and East Lake Street, where they found the victim suffering from critical wounds. She later died at a hospital.
Investigators say Smith originally denied any involvement in the stabbing death, but then admitted getting into an altercation with victim. Police say when pressed she eventually admitted carrying out the stabbing.
