MINNEAPOLIS - A 19-year-old man was taken into custody after leading police on a chase that ended in Lake Harriet on Tuesday.

Bloomington police said that they were trying to stop the driver of a 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada for a traffic violation when an officer realized that the car had been reported stolen.

The driver did not stop and instead led police into Minneapolis. While traveling northbound on Penn Avenue, the driver failed to negotiate a turn onto Lake Harriet Parkway. The vehicle continued north and came to a stop in the lake.

The driver walked back to shore on his own where he was placed under arrest. He faces charges of fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.

He was the only occupant in the vehicle. The driver was taken to HCMC as a precaution.

The Bloomington Police Department was assisted at the scene by Minneapolis police and fire.
