HASTINGS, Minn. - The trial is underway for an Apple Valley man accused of killing his wife and her fetus.
According to the criminal complaint, 36-year-old Roger Holland strangled 37-year-old Margorie Holland at their town house last March and made it look like she accidentally fell down a staircase. Her 15-week old fetus also died.
Holland claims he left home to get breakfast and found her unresponsive at the bottom of the stairs when he returned.
KARE 11's Jana Shortal was in the courtroom. She tweeted that during opening statements prosecutors maintained Holland killed his pregnant wife because she was going to leave him. In turn, his defense team is arguing that police never really investigated case, just pinned it on Holland.
According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press prosecutors have about 70 people on their list of potential witnesses, including bank and credit card record keepers.
The defense plans to call an electronics forensics expert, an investigator who photographed the home and several of Holland's relatives and fellow military service members.
