RICE LAKE, Wis. -- A Wisconsin woman proved that you're never too old to learn something new.

Alice Smith, 80, of Rice Lake, Wis. decided to pursue her lifelong dream of getting her GED but admits she also did it to keep her mind sharp.

Smith dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to help her dad work on the family farm when her two brothers joined the Army during World War II. Life did not slow down for Alice who eventually got married and had eight children. She now has 19 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren to keep her even busier.

But Alice never gave up the idea of getting her high school diploma so in September of 2007 she started working with the staff of Student Success Center at the Rice Lake campus of Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College.

A short 18 months later, Alice has finally earned her GED and will receive her diploma during a graduation ceremony in May.

Alice is now working to improve her computer skills.
