ELK RIVER, Minn. -- A freight train collided with a car in Elk River on Wednesday morning, killing the driver instantly.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Procter Avenue and Highway 10.
The driver has been identified as 72-year-old Daniel Bey Greene of Elk River. Witnesses indicate Greene's vehicle slowly edged forward under the railroad warning arms and onto the railroad tracks in front of a westbound Burlington Northern Sante Fe freight train, which violently collided with Greene's 2006 Nissan Altima.
The crossing arms apparently were working at the time of the collision.
The railroad tracks have been cleared to accommodate rail traffic and to open the tracks for the Northstar Commuter rail line. Transportation officials were worried that afternoon service on the new commuter line would be affected, but the work went faster than expected and as of 2 p.m. Wednesday no impact on routes was expected.
However, traffic on Proctor Avenue between Hwy 10 and School St. will continue to be shut down for several hours.
The investigation is being conducted by the Elk River Police Department and the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office, in cooperation with investigators from the Burlington Northern Sante Fe railway.
