HASTINGS, Minn.-- A Dakota County man already charged with DWI and Child endangerment is now accused of criminal vehicular homicide for his role in a fatal Christmas Eve crash.
Prosecutors say 37 year old Jeffrey Martin of Lakeville was driving drunk with his three children in the vehicle when he struck another car with two seniors inside. 88-year-old Everett Letterly of Prior Lake was killed and his wife, who was driving the car, was badly injured.
"This is another sad and tragic example of the significant danger associated with drinking and driving," said Dakota County Attorney Jim Backstrom. "Drunk driving kills and cripples more people than any other crime in America."
Martin was charged Monday with criminal vehicular homicide in Letterly's death. of Prior Lake. He was earlier charged with drunken driving and child endangerment for having his children, ages 4, 9 and 10, in the family's SUV.
The suspect is free on $18,000 bail. A judge also ordered Martin to submit to alco-sensor monitoring.
