MADISON, Wis. -- Police say a man and his wife were killed in their western Wisconsin home.

The La Crosse Tribune newspaper reports Dennis Koula, 68, and his wife, Merna Koula, 65, were found dead in their Town of Barre home Monday morning. Their son found the bodies.

West Salem School District Superintendent Nancy Burns tells The Associated Press that Merna Koula was scheduled to substitute teach at West Salem Middle School on Monday morning. When she didn't show up the principal notified her family.

La Crosse County Sheriff's Capt. Kurt Papenfuss on Tuesday afternoon confirmed the scene was a double homicide. He said he was still waiting for more details from investigators returning from the couple's autopsies at Regina Medical Center in Hastings, Minn., but called the investigation "active." He declined further comment.
