Man stunned by Minneapolis police dies

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- A 28-year-old man who was stunned by police following a struggle at a YMCA in Minneapolis has died.

David Cornelius Smith had been on life support at Hennepin County Medical Center since the Sept. 9 incident.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Garcia says Smith died at 9:30 p.m. Friday.

His uncle, Larry Smith of Oak Park, Ill. says Smith was declared brain dead and life support equipment had to be disconnected.

Police responded to the YMCA about a man who was disturbing members. Officers say they tried to physically remove the man from the sixth-floor gym, but he punched and kicked them. One officers used a Taser gun.

The two officers involved had been put on standard paid administrative leave. Both officers are back to work and the investigation continues.
