APPLE VALLEY, Minn. -- The Minnesota Zoo's dolphin calf has a new name, courtesy of the zoo's Facebook fans.
Online voters selected 'Taijah' as the name for the female Atlantic bottlenose calf.
Over 3,000 names were submitted during the contest's initial phase, and the zoo's marine mammal staff then narrowed the list down to three. From that point Facebook fans were allowed to decide.
A total of 1,833 votes were submitted on Facebook for the final name.
- 'Taijah' 687 votes receiving 37% of the votes
- 'Marais' 637 votes receiving 35% of the votes
- 'Sealie' 509 votes receiving 28% of the votes
Described as "spunky, inquisitive, bold and sassy," the female calf made her public debut on October 19 and has been busy since that time exploring her new home.
Taijah was born July 17 to mom Allie and dad Semo. She currently is about 4 feet long, 60 pounds, and is very
curious about her surroundings.
