MAHTOMEDI, Minn.  --  Charles Miller woke up this morning in his home on Long Lake, looked out onto the water and sprang into action.

He saw a juvenile Trumpeter Swan, stuck swimming in a small area on the water, clearly injured an unable to leave the frigid water. Miller called his friend Aaron Doering and together they got into winter gear, loaded up a canoe, and headed out onto the icy lake.

"You want to do this," Miller asked his friend before they paddled out.

It wasn't exactly the best of conditions to take out a canoe.

The men were on the water for about 10 minutes before they were able to net the swan and bring him into shore.

"He is really tired," Miller said as the two came back towards the house.

They took the swan to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville where a veterinarian was ready to treat the swan.

"We get in a lot of Trumpeter Swans and Canadian Geese or mallard that fails to migrate for one reason or another," Leslie Reed, the Vet on staff said.

Reed says the swan will be treated for his injuries at the center.
