APPLE VALLEY, Minn. -- Police in Apple Valley believe a woman set her house on fire before leading authorities on a chase and stabbing herself with a screwdriver Thursday morning.

A neighbor called in the fire at 4754 142nd St. W. at 9:15 a.m. Thursday.  Police also received information that a woman who lived at the residence had poured gasoline inside the house and was threatening to kill herself.

When officers arrived on the scene, they saw flames coming out of the back of the house and a woman in a locked car outside the home.  Police say the woman was stabbing herself in the chest with a screwdriver.

As an officer approached the woman, she fled in her vehicle and a chase ensued.

The woman, a 49-year-old, was eventually stopped in Eagan after authorities deployed road spikes on Pilot Knob Rd. at Cliff Rd, which flattened the car's tires and ended the pursuit.  Officers found the woman inside the car using a hammer to pound a screwdriver into her chest.

According to Police Chief Scott Johnson, the woman's son was found dead in the home on November 17.  That death is still under investigation.

The woman's husband was at the house at the time of the fire.  He ran to a neighbor's home when the fire started.

The woman and her husband were transported to Regions Hospital.

The fire is currently under investigation.

The house is considered a total loss after the fire.
