ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Fans packed Schoenecker Arena Tuesday to celebrate a big win for St. Thomas.

For the first time ever, the men's basketball team won the NCAA Division III championship, and for the first time since winning the title almost two weeks ago, they shared the trophy with fans.

Players took to the floor to thank those before them who made the journey possible.

"Guys like Joe Scott, Mike Keating, Coach John Tauer, Sean Sweeney. They laid the foundation for St Thomas. we would not have been where we are today without them," Tommy Hannon, a junior center said.

Head coach Steve Fritz said this season will become a legendary one not just because of the national championship, but also because this is the team that made it happen.

"We've had a lot of good teams and they're really all a part of this too but to be able to play well on the big stage it really is about as a good of thing as can happen," Fritz said.

Star player Tyler Nicolai couldn't think of a better way to end his senior year.

"It's more of a bittersweet feeling. It's all still very surreal that we won a national championship," Nicolai said.

The last time St. Thomas made it the NCAA was in 1994.
