CRYSTAL, Minn. -- We're kicking off our "Share Your Backyard" summer series with a visit to Tanya Frank's backyard in Crystal.
Tanya describes her backyard as a "Tiki Oasis," saying she wanted to bring Mexico to her backyard since she does not get the chance to travel there as much as she would like to. A gazebo from Target, and a few trips to Mexico and the Caribbean, became the inspiration for the true tropical get-away right outside her back door.
Using mostly all recycled materials, including bricks from a 1950's outdoor crumbling fireplace to create the fire-pit patio and grill area, ads on Craigslist for old, free fence wood, warped landscaping logs that were turned into palm tree stems and reclaimed building items from old landscape structures, Joe was able to create an beautiful, inexpensive oasis. The biggest attraction of the oasis was the custom made head-in-a-hold cutout, similar to those at the State Fair, that Tanya's boyfriend Joe made for her birthday last year. The cut out included a tiki-girl "Lola" and a tiki-guy "Tiki Joe" that provides great photo opportunities.
Every Wednesday this summer, we will broadcast live from a viewer's backyard during the 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. newscast. Submit a picture of your backyard and a KARE 11 meteorologist could come and broadcast the weather live in your very own backyard.
You can upload your picture and contact information via the KARE 11 Facebook page by adding your backyard picture to the "Share Your Backyard" photo album on the main page.
