GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Despite strong gains in the stock market over the past year, a recent Gallup survey finds stock ownership is at its lowest level in 15 years.
Slightly over half of Americans own stocks outright or as part of mutual funds.
Translation: Half of us aren't saving anything for retirement.
Nicole N. Middendorf, CDFA is a LPL Financial Advisor and CEO of Prosperwell Financial. Middendorf says she is shocked to learn that individuals are investing less in stocks and stresses the importance of saving for retirement.
She has come up with a few ideas on how to do it:
- Take advantage of IRAs
- You can invest $5,00 or $6,500 if over 50 per year and you can own stocks inside of that IRA
- Buy stocks for your kids to teach them about money
- Start. Just start. It's never too late to start investing
